Andrew Furey launches ” buy local Newfoundland”

In response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent imposition of a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, Newfoundland and Labrador has launched a “Buy Local” campaign to mitigate potential economic impacts. Premier Andrew Furey is encouraging residents to support local businesses and products, aiming to bolster the provincial economy during this challenging period.

The United States is a significant trading partner for Newfoundland and Labrador. In 2023, the province exported approximately $4.5 billion worth of goods to the U.S., accounting for 37% of its total exports. Notably, between 60% to 80% of the province’s seafood harvest is destined for U.S. markets, with snow crab being a major export.

Premier Furey has been proactive in addressing the tariff issue, holding multiple roundtable discussions with industry and community leaders to formulate a comprehensive response plan. He emphasizes the importance of a united approach, stating, “There’s a strong united team NL approach to a united team Canada approach with an informed response.” The provincial government is also introducing a new brand to raise awareness of Newfoundland and Labrador products both locally and globally.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy is deeply intertwined with North American trade networks. Historically, the province has been a significant player in international markets, exporting products like saltfish to regions such as Southern Europe, Brazil, and the British Caribbean. Today, its contributions to industries like fisheries, oil and gas, and mining underscore its vital role in the broader North American economy.

• St. John’s: The capital city, known for its vibrant arts scene and historic architecture.

• Happy Valley-Goose Bay: A central location for military and aviation activities in Labrador.

Premier Andrew Furey, a native of St. John’s, has been serving as the 14th premier of Newfoundland and Labrador since August 2020. Before entering politics, he was an orthopedic surgeon and co-founded Team Broken Earth, a volunteer task force providing medical relief in Haiti and other developing nations. His leadership during the current trade challenges reflects his commitment to the province’s resilience and prosperity.
